The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is reportedly investigating serious allegations of widespread corruption and extortion levied against the top management of Stung Treng Provincial Prison, following a formal petition filed by several inmates.<\/p>\n
The petition specifically names Mr. Lim Veasna, the Prison Chief, and Mr. Pum Rotanak, Head of Inmate Management Operations, accusing them of operating a complex scheme to extract money from detainees. Allegations, reportedly detailed in video statements by an inmate representative, include the monthly ‘sale’ of influential inmate room chief positions, purportedly demanding sums ranging from $5,000 to $7,000 per room.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the officials are accused of demanding significant bribes\u2014up to $1,000 per device\u2014to overlook the possession of prohibited mobile phones, often found in large quantities during searches.<\/p>\n
In response to the public claims, the Stung Treng Provincial Prison administration issued a strong clarification and denial. The prison categorically rejected the accusations, stating that the claims originated from certain inmates who were dissatisfied with the prison\u2019s strict enforcement of regulations, particularly routine searches aimed at confiscating mobile phones and contraband.
