Cambodian Government Escalates Active Diplomacy to Protect Territorial Integrity and Citizens

The Royal Government of Cambodia is intensifying its dynamic diplomatic efforts both domestically and internationally to safeguard national interests, territorial integrity, and its citizens, particularly amidst ongoing border issues with Thailand. On February 23, 2026, the Government Spokesperson informed the nation about Cambodia’s proactive diplomatic endeavors. Prime Minister Samdech Moha Bavara Thipadei Hun Manet is currently undertaking a busy diplomatic mission in the United States and Europe, engaging with numerous high-ranking international officials. The primary objective of these meetings is to strengthen cooperation and address critical regional and international challenges, with the Cambodia-Thailand border issue being a prominent concern.

In Washington, the Prime Minister reportedly emphasized peace as Cambodia’s core value, advocating for the full and sincere implementation of existing agreements, peaceful resolution in accordance with international law, and the non-use of force. Domestically, H.E. Eat Sophea, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, led a delegation of diplomats to inspect areas in Banteay Meanchey province where Thai troops allegedly encroached and obstructed civilians’ return.

Since July 24, 2025, the government has actively responded to alleged violations, issuing over 700 statements and formally protesting the reported detention of three Cambodian citizens and the seizure of their fishing boat by the Royal Thai Navy near Koh Kong on February 22, 2026. The Royal Government underscores that protecting territorial integrity and its people is its highest priority, demonstrating a resolute commitment to upholding the international Cambodia-Thailand border established by the Indochina-Siam Boundary Commission. This stance is rooted in principles of international law, *Uti Possidetis Juris*, Franco-Siamese conventions/treaties, maps, and relevant demarcation records, unequivocally rejecting any border alterations resulting from the use of force.
