Wildfire Triggers Explosions of Wartime Ordnance Near Cambodia-Thailand Border in Poipet
On the afternoon of January 30, 2026, a wildfire broke out in Zone S along the Cambodia-Thailand border, spanning from Prey Kuk village to Ou Neang in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province. According to a clarification provided by H.E. Pan Khem Bunthon, the fire caused residual wartime ordnance, including landmines, to detonate, leading to audible explosions in the area. Authorities emphasized that these sounds were strictly the result of unexploded ordnance (UXO) detonating due to the heat of the fire, not an armed conflict or shooting incident. Local authorities and forces are reportedly managing the situation directly at the site.
