This move follows a 30% surge in crude oil prices, which reached approximately $98 per barrel following joint military operations by the U.S. and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The conflict has led to a 12-day disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor that typically handles 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products daily. The IEA aims to mitigate the economic impact of this supply chain blockage by utilizing a portion of its 1.2 billion barrels of collective state-held reserves.
